Stalin’s Death
Stalin’s death in 1953 created an opportunity for change.
The new Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, was less extreme than Stalin.
Khrushchev believed peaceful coexistence with the West was possible, although he still wanted communism to succeed.

Peaceful coexistence meant that the USSR and USA should avoid direct conflict and compete without war.
Reasons for the Thaw included:
- Fear of nuclear war
- The huge cost of the arms race
- New leadership after Stalin
- A desire for greater international stability
