After the war, Germany was divided into four zones occupied by the Allied powers.
Berlin, although located inside the Soviet zone, was also divided into four sectors.
Why Was Germany Divided?
The Allies wanted to:
- Prevent Germany from becoming powerful again
- Remove Nazism
- Punish war criminals
- Rebuild Europe safely
However, tensions soon developed because the USSR and the Western Allies wanted different futures for Germany.
The Western zones became more democratic and capitalist, while the Soviet zone became communist.
Germany eventually became a major focus of Cold War tensions.
