What Was NATO?
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
It was created in 1949 as a military alliance between Western countries.
Purpose of NATO
NATO aimed to:
- Protect Western Europe from Soviet attack
- Strengthen cooperation between capitalist countries
- Support collective defence
An attack on one NATO member would be treated as an attack on all members.
