What Was the U2?
The Lockheed U-2 was an American spy plane used to photograph Soviet military sites.
The USA used U2 planes to gather intelligence about:
- Soviet missile bases
- Nuclear weapons
- Military activity
The Plane Is Shot Down
In May 1960, a U2 plane flown by Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the USSR.
At first, the USA claimed it was a weather aircraft.
However, the Soviets captured Powers alive and exposed the truth.
Khrushchev’s Reaction
Khrushchev was furious because:
- The USA had violated Soviet airspace
- The spying embarrassed the USSR
- It damaged trust between the superpowers
Khrushchev demanded an apology from the USA.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower refused to apologise fully.
