Berlin at the Centre of the Cold War
After the Second World War, Germany and Berlin were divided between East and West.
- West Germany became capitalist and democratic
- East Germany became communist and controlled by the USSR
Berlin itself was also divided:
- West Berlin was controlled by Britain, France and the USA
- East Berlin was controlled by the USSR
Because West Berlin was located deep inside communist East Germany, it became one of the most dangerous flashpoints of the Cold War.
