Kennedy’s Position
John F. Kennedy strongly opposed communism but avoided direct military action.
Kennedy believed:
- War over Berlin could lead to nuclear conflict
- Protecting West Berlin was essential
- The USA must show strength without starting war
American Reaction
The USA protested against the Wall but did not try to destroy it.
Kennedy accepted the Wall as preferable to open war.
He famously commented:
“A wall is a hell of a lot better than a war.”
