What Happened?

In 1961, the USA supported a group of Cuban exiles who attempted to overthrow Castro.

The invasion took place at the Bay of Pigs.

Why Did It Fail?

The invasion failed because:

  • The plan was poorly organised
  • Cuban forces were stronger than expected
  • The CIA underestimated Castro’s support
  • The USA did not provide enough direct military support

The failure humiliated the USA and strengthened Castro’s position.

Impact of the Bay of Pigs

  • Castro became more reliant on the USSR
  • Khrushchev increased support for Cuba
  • Kennedy’s reputation was damaged
  • Relations between USA and Cuba worsened

This set the stage for a far more dangerous crisis.
