What Happened?
In 1961, the USA supported a group of Cuban exiles who attempted to overthrow Castro.
The invasion took place at the Bay of Pigs.
Why Did It Fail?
The invasion failed because:
- The plan was poorly organised
- Cuban forces were stronger than expected
- The CIA underestimated Castro’s support
- The USA did not provide enough direct military support
The failure humiliated the USA and strengthened Castro’s position.
Impact of the Bay of Pigs
- Castro became more reliant on the USSR
- Khrushchev increased support for Cuba
- Kennedy’s reputation was damaged
- Relations between USA and Cuba worsened
This set the stage for a far more dangerous crisis.
