Who Was Fidel Castro?
Fidel Castro led a revolution against Cuba’s government in the 1950s.
He opposed the dictator Fulgencio Batista, who was supported by the USA.
Why Did Castro Gain Support?
Castro gained popularity because:
- Many Cubans were poor and unemployed
- Batista’s government was corrupt and authoritarian
- The USA had strong economic influence over Cuba
- Castro promised land reform and social justice
In 1959, Castro successfully overthrew Batista and took control of Cuba.
Cuba Becomes Communist
After taking power, Castro:
- Nationalised industries and businesses
- Took control of foreign-owned companies (including American ones)
- Began building ties with the USSR
The USA became increasingly hostile towards Cuba.
