Who Was Fidel Castro?

Fidel Castro led a revolution against Cuba’s government in the 1950s.

He opposed the dictator Fulgencio Batista, who was supported by the USA.

Why Did Castro Gain Support?

Castro gained popularity because:

  • Many Cubans were poor and unemployed
  • Batista’s government was corrupt and authoritarian
  • The USA had strong economic influence over Cuba
  • Castro promised land reform and social justice

In 1959, Castro successfully overthrew Batista and took control of Cuba.

Cuba Becomes Communist

After taking power, Castro:

  • Nationalised industries and businesses
  • Took control of foreign-owned companies (including American ones)
  • Began building ties with the USSR

The USA became increasingly hostile towards Cuba.
