The USA: Capitalism and Democracy
The USA believed in:
- Capitalism — businesses and industries owned privately for profit
- Democracy — people vote in free elections
- Individual freedoms such as freedom of speech and religion
American leaders feared communism because they believed it removed freedom and could spread across Europe.
The USSR: Communism and Dictatorship
The USSR believed in:
- Communism — wealth and industry controlled by the state
- One-party rule under the Communist Party
- Strong government control over society and the economy
Soviet leader Joseph Stalin believed capitalism was dangerous and that the USSR needed friendly communist states around its borders for protection.
