What Was the Marshall Plan?
The Marshall Plan was an American programme that gave economic aid to European countries after the war.
It was named after US Secretary of State George C. Marshall.
The USA provided billions of dollars to help rebuild Europe.
Why Did the USA Introduce the Marshall Plan?
The USA wanted to:
- Rebuild European economies
- Prevent poverty and unrest
- Stop people turning to communism
- Create markets for American goods
The USA believed poor countries were more likely to become communist.
Stalin’s Reaction to the Marshall Plan
Stalin viewed the Marshall Plan as:
- “Dollar imperialism”
- A way for the USA to control Europe economically
- A threat to Soviet influence
Stalin banned Eastern European countries from accepting Marshall Aid.
This deepened the division between East and West.
