A Change in the Cold War

After the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953, relations between East and West improved slightly.

This period became known as the “Thaw”.

Although the Cold War continued, there was less tension than before. Both superpowers recognised that nuclear war would be disastrous.

However, events such as the Hungarian Uprising and the U2 Crisis showed that mistrust and rivalry still remained strong.
