What Was the Brezhnev Doctrine?
After the invasion, Leonid Brezhnev introduced the Brezhnev Doctrine.
This stated that:
The USSR had the right to intervene in any communist country where communism was threatened.
Purpose of the Brezhnev Doctrine
The doctrine aimed to:
- Prevent reform movements
- Maintain Soviet control in Eastern Europe
- Protect communist governments
- Justify Soviet military intervention
The USSR made clear that Eastern European countries could not leave the communist system freely.
