What Was the Iron Curtain?
The term “Iron Curtain” described the division between communist Eastern Europe and capitalist Western Europe.
It symbolised:
- Political division
- Economic division
- Military tension
- Lack of communication between East and West
The phrase became famous after a speech by Winston Churchill in 1946.

In 1946, Churchill declared:
“An iron curtain has descended across the Continent.”
Churchill warned that the USSR was spreading communism across Eastern Europe.
