By the late 1960s, both the USA and USSR realised that Cold War tensions had become extremely dangerous.

Events such as:

  • The Berlin Crisis
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis
  • The arms race

had shown that nuclear war was a real possibility.

As a result, both superpowers began looking for ways to reduce tensions and improve communication.

This period of improved relations became known as Détente.
