Why Did It Happen?
After the Bay of Pigs, the USSR decided to place nuclear missiles in Cuba.
Reasons included:
- Protect Cuba from another US invasion
- Increase Soviet power in the Western Hemisphere
- Balance US missiles in Europe (e.g. in Turkey and Italy)
Discovery of the Missiles
In October 1962, American spy planes discovered Soviet missile sites in Cuba.
John F. Kennedy was informed immediately.
Why Were the Missiles So Dangerous?
The USA feared:
- Missiles could reach major US cities within minutes
- A surprise nuclear attack was now possible
- The USSR had changed the nuclear balance of power
- The USA might lose its military superiority
This was the closest the Cold War came to nuclear war.
