Why Did People Leave East Germany?
Between 1949 and 1961, millions of East Germans fled to the West.
Most escaped through Berlin because crossing the border there was easier.
Those leaving included:
- Skilled workers
- Doctors
- Teachers
- Young professionals
This became known as the “brain drain”.
Why Was This a Problem for the USSR?
The refugee crisis embarrassed the communist government because it suggested:
- People preferred capitalism to communism
- East Germany was failing economically
- Communist governments were unpopular
Nikita Khrushchev feared East Germany might collapse if people continued leaving.
