Although tensions eased somewhat after Stalin’s death, events in Hungary and the U2 Crisis showed that:

  • Both superpowers still deeply mistrusted each other
  • The USSR would use force to keep control in Eastern Europe
  • Spying and military rivalry continued
  • The Cold War remained dangerous

The Thaw reduced tensions temporarily, but it did not end the Cold War.
