What Were ICBMs?

ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) were long-range nuclear missiles capable of travelling across continents.

Intercontinental ballistic missile

They allowed nuclear weapons to be launched quickly over huge distances.

This made surprise attacks more possible and increased Cold War fears.

What Was Polaris?

UGM-27 Polaris was an American missile system carried on nuclear submarines.

Polaris missiles were important because submarines could hide underwater, making them difficult to destroy.

This strengthened America’s nuclear deterrent.
