Atomic Bombs and Hydrogen Bombs
The first nuclear weapons were atomic bombs.
In the 1950s, both sides developed hydrogen bombs, which were far more powerful.
This increased fears of total destruction in a future war.
Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)
By the 1960s, both superpowers possessed enough nuclear weapons to destroy each other many times over.
This idea became known as Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).
The theory suggested:
- Neither side would start nuclear war
- Both knew the result would be catastrophic
Although MAD may have prevented direct war, it also created fear and instability.
