French Rule in Vietnam
Before the Second World War, Vietnam was controlled by France.
After the war, Vietnamese nationalists and communists wanted independence.
The communist independence movement was led by Ho Chi Minh.
The Viet Minh Against France
Ho Chi Minh led the Viet Minh, a communist nationalist movement fighting French rule.
The USSR and China supported Ho Chi Minh.
The USA supported France because it feared communism spreading in Asia.
Defeat of France
In 1954, French forces were defeated at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.
Vietnam was temporarily divided into:
- Communist North Vietnam
- Anti-communist South Vietnam
