Soviet Support for Mao
The USSR supported Mao because:
- Stalin wanted communism to spread
- China could become a powerful communist ally
- Communist China strengthened the Eastern Bloc
In 1950, China and the USSR signed a friendship treaty.
American Reactions
The USA saw the “loss of China” as a major defeat.
American leaders feared:
- Communism was spreading rapidly in Asia
- Other countries might also become communist
- Soviet influence was becoming stronger
This increased support for containment and stronger American intervention overseas.
