Soviet Support for Mao

The USSR supported Mao because:

  • Stalin wanted communism to spread
  • China could become a powerful communist ally
  • Communist China strengthened the Eastern Bloc

In 1950, China and the USSR signed a friendship treaty.

American Reactions

The USA saw the “loss of China” as a major defeat.

American leaders feared:

  • Communism was spreading rapidly in Asia
  • Other countries might also become communist
  • Soviet influence was becoming stronger

This increased support for containment and stronger American intervention overseas.
