China Before the Revolution
Before 1949, China was divided by civil war between:
- The Nationalists, led by Chiang Kai-shek
- The Communists, led by Mao Zedong
The Nationalists had support from the USA, while the Communists received support from the USSR.
Why Did Mao Gain Support?
Mao’s Communist forces gained popularity because:
- Many peasants were poor and wanted land reform
- The Nationalist government was seen as corrupt
- The Nationalists struggled during the war against Japan
- Communist soldiers often treated peasants better
By 1949, Mao’s forces defeated the Nationalists.
Creation of Communist China
In October 1949, Mao declared the creation of the People’s Republic of China.
The Nationalists fled to Taiwan.
