What Was the Truman Doctrine?
In 1947, Harry S. Truman announced the Truman Doctrine.
This stated that the USA would support countries threatened by communism.
The policy was first used to support:
- Greece
- Turkey
Both countries were facing communist pressure.
Purpose of the Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine aimed to:
- Stop the spread of communism
- Contain Soviet influence
- Protect capitalism and democracy
- Show American strength
This marked the start of a more active American role in world affairs.
Stalin’s Reaction
Stalin believed the Truman Doctrine was:
- An attack on communism
- An attempt by the USA to expand its influence
- A threat to Soviet security
As a result, relations between East and West became even worse.
