Europe Divided
After the Second World War, tensions between the USA and the USSR increased rapidly.
The USSR tightened its control over Eastern Europe, while the USA tried to stop the spread of communism. Europe gradually became divided into two opposing sides:
- The communist East, dominated by the USSR
- The capitalist West, supported by the USA
This division became known as the “Iron Curtain”.
The years between 1945 and 1949 saw the Cold War become more serious and dangerous.
