In August 1945, the USA dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Why Did This Increase Tensions?
The USA believed the bomb would force Japan to surrender quickly and avoid a costly invasion.
However, Stalin saw the atomic bomb as:
- A threat to the USSR
- An attempt by the USA to dominate world affairs
- A sign that the USA no longer needed Soviet cooperation
As a result:
- Suspicion between the superpowers increased sharply
- The USSR accelerated development of its own atomic bomb
- An arms race began
The atomic bomb helped turn wartime allies into Cold War rivals.
