Private: The Norman Conquest, 1066

After Hastings

William did not immediately become king.

Some English nobles still resisted him.

Instead of marching directly into London, William moved carefully around the city.

William’s Strategy

William:

  • Burned villages to frighten resistance
  • Forced towns to surrender
  • Secured important routes
  • Gathered support from English nobles

Many people feared further destruction if they resisted.

Eventually important English leaders submitted to William.

Edgar Aetheling was among those who surrendered.
