Private: The Norman Conquest, 1066

A New Way of Organising Society

William introduced the feudal system to help control England.

Under this system:

  • The king owned all land
  • Barons received land from the king
  • Knights served the barons
  • Peasants worked the land

Everyone owed loyalty to someone above them.

Why It Mattered

The feudal system helped William:

  • Reward supporters
  • Raise armies quickly
  • Control local areas
  • Maintain loyalty

The system remained important for centuries.
