Who Built the Castles?

Building castles required huge amounts of labour.

Workers included:

• Norman soldiers
• Skilled craftsmen
• Local English workers
• Forced labourers

Building Materials

The first castles mainly used:

• Timber
• Earth
• Clay

Wood was easier to transport and build with than stone.

Later, many Norman castles were rebuilt in stone.
