Christmas Day 1066

William was crowned King of England on 25 December 1066.

The ceremony took place in Westminster Abbey.

However, the coronation was tense.

When the crowd shouted loudly during the ceremony, Norman guards outside believed a riot had begun.

Some soldiers even set nearby buildings on fire.

Despite the confusion, William was crowned king.

The Norman Conquest was complete.

England now had a Norman ruler.
