England After Hastings
After the Battle of Hastings, William was crowned king on Christmas Day 1066.
However, many English people did not accept him as the rightful ruler.
There were several reasons for this:
- William was a foreign ruler from Normandy
- English nobles lost land and power
- Norman soldiers occupied English towns
- Castles were built to control the population
- Taxes and punishments increased
- Some English people still supported Anglo-Saxon rulers
Resistance continued for several years after 1066.
