The End of Anglo-Saxon Rule
Before 1066, England was ruled by Anglo-Saxon nobles.
After the conquest, William gradually removed most English nobles from positions of power.
Many lost:
- Their land
- Their wealth
- Their influence
Norman nobles took their place.
Norman Landownership
William rewarded his followers with land.
By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, most of England’s land was controlled by Norman lords.
This meant that:
- Norman customs spread across England
- Norman nobles controlled local government
- English nobles became much less powerful
The conquest completely changed who ruled England.
