The Rebels’ Problems

English resistance failed for several reasons.

1. Lack of Unity

Different rebellions broke out in different places.

The rebels did not work together effectively.

2. Weak Leadership

Some leaders lacked experience.

Edgar Aetheling, for example, was young and inexperienced.

3. Norman Military Strength

William’s army was well-trained and well-equipped.

Norman cavalry gave them an advantage.

4. Castles

Norman castles helped control important areas.

5. William’s Ruthlessness

William was willing to use extreme violence.
