Private: The Norman Conquest, 1066

Royal Officials

William sent royal officials across England.

These officials travelled from county to county gathering information.

The counties were divided into smaller areas called hundreds.

Each hundred was investigated carefully.

Local Juries

Officials questioned groups of local people.

These groups often included:

  • Norman landowners
  • English villagers
  • Priests
  • Local officials

The juries answered questions about their area.

This helped the king gather information from people who knew the land best.

Questions Asked

The officials asked many detailed questions.

For example:

  • Who owned the land before 1066?
  • Who owns it now?
  • How much land is there?
  • How many villagers live there?
  • How many ploughs are used?
  • How many animals are kept?

The answers were written down and sent back to the king.
