Swearing Loyalty

An important part of the feudal system was the oath of loyalty.

Barons and knights promised to serve the king faithfully.

Breaking this oath was considered a serious crime.

The Salisbury Oath

In 1086, William gathered important landowners at Salisbury.

They swore loyalty directly to him.

This strengthened William’s authority over England.
