The Problem Facing William
William was a foreign ruler.
Many Anglo-Saxon nobles hated Norman rule.
William could not control England by himself.
He needed loyal followers to help govern the country.
Rewarding Norman Supporters
William gave land to Norman nobles who had supported him during the conquest.
In return, they had to:
- Remain loyal
- Provide soldiers
- Help defend England
This strengthened Norman control.
Replacing Anglo-Saxon Nobles
Before 1066, Anglo-Saxon nobles owned most of the land.
After the conquest, William removed many English nobles and replaced them with Normans.
By around 1086, Normans owned most of England’s land.
This meant:
- Norman power increased
- English noble power collapsed
- William could trust the people controlling the country
