Private: The Norman Conquest, 1066

Fire Risk

Because the castles were made from wood, they could catch fire easily.

Enemies sometimes used burning arrows during attacks.

Rot and Decay

Wooden castles could rot over time.

They required constant repairs.

Limited Space

Some castles were cramped.

There was not always enough room for large numbers of soldiers.

Not Permanent

As Norman control became stronger, many wooden castles were replaced with stronger stone castles.
