Private: The Norman Conquest, 1066

How Did William Keep Control?

William used several methods to secure England.

1. Castles

The Normans built castles across England.

Why Were Castles Important?

Castles:

  • Controlled towns and roads
  • Protected Norman soldiers
  • Intimidated local people
  • Allowed quick military responses

Motte and Bailey Castles

The first Norman castles were usually motte and bailey castles.

They were built quickly from wood and earth.

The Motte

A large earth mound with a wooden tower on top.

The Bailey

An enclosed area surrounded by fences.

2. Replacing English Nobles

William removed many Anglo-Saxon nobles.

He gave their land to Norman supporters.

This meant:

  • Normans controlled most land
  • English nobles lost power
  • William rewarded loyal followers

3. Military Force

William used his army to crush rebellions quickly.

The Norman army included:

  • Cavalry
  • Archers
  • Professional soldiers

The English rebels often lacked organisation and strong leadership.

4. Fear and Punishment

William used harsh punishments to discourage rebellion.

The Harrying of the North was the clearest example.

People understood that resistance could lead to terrible consequences.
