Private: The Norman Conquest, 1066

Trouble in Northumbria

The Normans struggled to control Northumbria.

Several Norman earls were attacked or killed.

Local people resisted Norman authority.

Danish Support

In 1069, a Danish fleet arrived to support the rebels.

This was a serious danger for William because:

  • Denmark had strong Viking connections with England
  • The Danes could support Edgar Aetheling
  • William feared a larger invasion

The rebels captured the city of York.

Norman control in the north almost collapsed.
