Who Was Edgar Aetheling?
Edgar Aetheling was the great-nephew of Edward the Confessor.
He had the strongest blood claim to the English throne.
However, in 1066 Edgar was still a teenager and lacked military experience.
The Witan chose Harold Godwinson instead.
Edgar After Hastings
After Harold’s death at Hastings, some English nobles supported Edgar as king.
However, William’s army was too strong.
Edgar eventually submitted to William in late 1066.
Even so, Edgar continued to be involved in rebellions against Norman rule.
He became an important symbol of English resistance.
