Harold’s Rapid March
Harold marched his army around 190 miles from London to Yorkshire in only a few days.
This was an incredible achievement.
The Viking army did not expect Harold to arrive so quickly.
The Surprise Attack
On 25 September 1066, Harold attacked the Viking army at Stamford Bridge.
Many Vikings had left their armour behind because they believed they were safe.
The Battle
The fighting was fierce.
According to stories from the time, a huge Viking warrior defended the bridge alone and held back the English army for some time.
Eventually the English crossed the bridge and overwhelmed the Vikings.
Harald Hardrada was killed.
Tostig was also killed.
The Viking invasion had been defeated.
However, Harold’s army was exhausted.
Then terrible news arrived.
William had landed in southern England.
