Germany became a united country in 1871 after victory in the Franco-Prussian War. Before this, Germany had been made up of many smaller states.

By 1890:

  • Germany had the strongest army in Europe
  • industry was growing rapidly
  • cities were expanding
  • nationalism was very strong
  • many Germans respected authority and the military

However, Germany was not a full democracy like Britain was becoming.
