Who Were the Spartacists?
The Spartacists were a communist group inspired by the Russian Revolution.
Their leaders were:
- Rosa Luxemburg
- Karl Liebknecht
They wanted Germany to become communist.
The Uprising
In January 1919, the Spartacists attempted to take control of Berlin.
The government was weak and relied on the Freikorps to stop them.
Freikorps
The Freikorps were groups of ex-soldiers:
- Nationalist
- Anti-communist
- Violent
The uprising was crushed brutally.
Luxemburg and Liebknecht were killed.
Why Was the Spartacist Uprising Important?
The uprising showed:
- The republic faced serious threats
- The government depended on the army and Freikorps
- Political violence had become common
