Wilhelm wanted Germany to become a major global power. His policies became known as Weltpolitik (“world policy”).

His aims included:

  • building a powerful navy
  • expanding Germany’s empire
  • increasing German influence around the world
  • making Germany respected and feared

These ambitions increased tensions with other countries, especially Britain.
