The Enabling Act was a key step in destroying democracy.

It allowed Hitler to:

  • Pass laws without the Reichstag
  • Rule without presidential approval
  • Ignore the constitution for four years

How it passed:

  • Communists were arrested and unable to vote
  • SA intimidated opposition politicians
  • Centre Party was persuaded to support it

Result: Hitler became legally able to rule as a dictator.
