Night of the Long Knives
Hitler ordered the execution of SA leader Ernst Röhm and other rivals.
Why?
- The SA (led by Röhm) wanted a “second revolution”
- The army feared the SA’s power
- Hitler needed the army’s loyalty
Hitler acted by:
- Arresting SA leaders
- Having Röhm and others executed
- Destroying the SA’s power
This reassured the army and conservative elites.
