Night of the Long Knives

Hitler ordered the execution of SA leader Ernst Röhm and other rivals.

Why?

  • The SA (led by Röhm) wanted a “second revolution”
  • The army feared the SA’s power
  • Hitler needed the army’s loyalty

Hitler acted by:

  • Arresting SA leaders
  • Having Röhm and others executed
  • Destroying the SA’s power

This reassured the army and conservative elites.
