When Hitler came to power, he promised to solve unemployment and restore Germany’s economy after the Great Depression. Over time, Nazi economic policies did reduce unemployment and increase production, but they also brought restrictions, inequality, and ultimately the hardships of war.
The Nazi economy changed in three main phases:
- 1933–1936: Recovery and job creation
- 1936–1939: Preparation for war (rearmament and self-sufficiency)
- 1939–1945: Wartime economy and total war
While many Germans experienced improved employment and stability in the 1930s, the later war years brought severe hardship including bombing, shortages, and displacement.
