Once war began in 1939, everyday life changed dramatically.
Bombing:
- Allied bombing raids destroyed cities, homes, and factories
- Civilian casualties increased significantly
- Infrastructure (transport, housing, industry) was heavily damaged
Rationing:
- Food, clothing, and fuel were strictly controlled
- Many goods became scarce
- Diets became less varied and poorer in quality
Labour shortages:
- Many German men were conscripted into the army
- Women, prisoners, and forced labourers were used in factories
- Foreign forced labour became essential to the war economy
Refugees:
- Millions fled bombing in cities
- Later in the war, Germans fled advancing Soviet forces in the east
- Large-scale displacement created overcrowding and hardship
