The Reichstag building was set on fire in February 1933. A Dutch communist, Marinus van der Lubbe, was arrested.

Hitler used the fire as evidence of a supposed communist threat:

  • Communists were blamed for planning a revolution
  • Civil liberties were suspended
  • Thousands of communists were arrested

This helped Hitler present himself as Germany’s protector against chaos.
