After becoming Chancellor in January 1933, Hitler was not yet a dictator. He still had to work within the Weimar constitution, share power with other politicians, and face opposition in the Reichstag.
However, within just 18 months, Hitler removed all political opposition and created a one-party dictatorship. He used a combination of legal methods, propaganda, intimidation, and violence to destroy democracy from within.
Key steps included:
- The Reichstag Fire (February 1933)
- The Enabling Act (March 1933)
- The elimination of political parties and trade unions
- The Night of the Long Knives (June 1934)
Hitler becoming Führer (August 1934)
