Their role included:

  • Protecting Nazi meetings
  • Disrupting opponents’ meetings (especially communists)
  • Intimidating voters in elections
  • Creating a sense of order and strength

This use of violence made the Nazis appear powerful and helped them dominate streets in some areas.
